Effie Gage, "Army" Helper, Dead At 89
Mrs. Effie Gage, the dean of Lewiston's Salvation Army Soldiers, died of a heart attack t 10:30 a.m. yesterday in the Merriman Hotel apartment where she lived. She was 89.
She was stricken while working at her sewing machine on a quilt for the Salvation Army, in whose ranks she had served for 38 years--longer than anyone else in this area.
Her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Burnam, with whom she lived at the Merriman, was with her when she died.
Mrs. Gage had long been active as a volunteer worker in the organization, sewing, collecting funds, and selling the Salvation Army Magazine, "The War Cry."
Her skill in making Salvation Army purses from cloth and cotton and cottage cheese cartons was the envy of her fellow soldiers.
In vigorous health until the end, she pursued a multitude of hobbies--crocheting, rug making, quilting, and making other fancy work.
A resident of the Lewiston area for the last eight years, she moved to the hotel last March. She had been a resident of the Stites area for many years.
She was born at Sedalia, Mo., on April 18, 1869, moving as a child with her parents to Kansas. She settled with her parents in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon in 1879.
She Married Jefferson Zumwalt at Longcreek, Ore., on May 30, 1888, and lived with him in the Stites area until their divorce in 1909.
Her second husband, Alexander Gage, whom she married Aug. 10, 1913, at Lewiston, died on July 2, 1932.
Survivors in addition to Mrs. Burnam, are three other children, all by her first marriage: a son, Ray Zumwalt of Seattle; and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Brooks, Clarkston, and Mrs. Christel Shelley, Oregon City, Ore.; 44 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
