Hunter Chamberlain, as he was most familiarly known, had spent practically his whole life in the town of Belfast, where he was highly regarded. He was born in the township of Allen, February 11, 1843, the son of Moses Van Campen and Cynthia Frost Chamberlain. He was one of a large family of children, ten of whom lived to manhood and womanhood.
On February 14, 1872, he was united in marriage to Mary Isabelle Payne of Portageville, who survives her husband. She has been an invalid for a number of years, residing in the Arnold home.
Mr. Chamberlain is survived by six children: Mrs. Eva Arnold of Cuba, Mrs. Mary Jacobs of Angelica, Allen Chamberlain of Rochester, Mrs. Birdina Van Tuyl of Greenport, Long Island, Mrs. Edna Eadie of Coudersport, Pennsylvania, and Dwight P. Chamberlain of Kenmore; also by 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; also by three brothers and two sisters: D. W. Chamberlain and B. F. Chamberlain of Caneadea, Edwin Chamberlain and Mrs. Ella Hotchkiss of Belfast and Mrs. Hephzibah Clark of Ovid, Michigan.
Mr. Chamberlain was a farmer by calling. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, having been connected with that of Belfast and later with that of Angelica, which was nearest to his farm home. Mr. Chamberlain is highly spoken of by all who knew him. He was a Christian, a good man and a kind father.
He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding in Cuba five years ago.
The funeral was held in the Belfast Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Smith, with burial in Belfast cemetery. Among those present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Israel Jacobs and daughter Dorothy of Angelica; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Eadie of Coudersport; Mrs. Otto Van Tuyl and little son Roderick of Greenport, Long Island; Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Chamberlain of Kenmore; Allen Chamberlain of Rochester; Mrs. Burt Arwine and son Francis Chamberlain of Hornell, also a large number of relatives less nearly connected.
