John Henry Merchant, lifelong resident of the town of Cape Vincent, died at his home in Pleasant Valley this (Wednesday) morning at about 4:30, after an illness of five month. Mr. Merchant had been suffering with a throat ailment. Mr. Merchant was born on Carleton Island, May 31, 1877, the son of the late Henry and Christina Kirchtier Merchant, both natives of the town of Cape Vincent. The family moved from the Island when he was quite young and the rest of his life was spent in this vicinity. Mr. Merchant had followed the occupation of farming for many years and was engaged in this work up until the time he was taken seriously ill. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul's Catholic church. For several years he served as trustee of the church. He was also a member of LeRay de Chaumant Council, K. of C, Rosiere. Mr. Merchant never married. Surviving him are two brothers,
Frank P. and George Merchant, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Borland, of this village, and Miss Mary Merchant
