James was the second son of Joseph and Elizabeth Baldwin. He was known as "James of Milford, Durham and Saybrook, Connecticut."

He married 16 June 1690 to ELIZABETH ROGERS, born 1675 in Milford, Connecticut.

"James Baldwin, a weaver" purchased land in Milford, Connecticut. The deed was dated 5 August 1692. On 12 January 1692, James acted with Eliezer Rogers, in dividing the undivided estate of his grandfather Joseph I, between Jonathan and the children of David. Benjamin having removed to Newark, and conveyed to the other two.

James and Elizabeth gave their children Biblical names:
1) Elizabeth Baldwin
2) David Baldwin
3) Phebe Baldwin
4) Elizabeth Baldwin [again)
5) Moses Baldwin.
6) Aaron Baldwin
7) Hannah Baldwin
