Ruby was the eldest of the three daughters of Harry and Eulavea (Browning) Longwell. Her sisters were Roberta Jean and Wanda Lou. The family lived on a farm near Half Rock, Missouri, and the girls attended the public schools in Princeton, MO. Ruby graduated from Princeton High School in 1953.

In July 1954, Ruby married Robert Taylor Kelly of Princeton. While she lived in Princeton, Ruby worked as a secretary at the Grand River Mutual Telephone Cooperative. In 1979, she moved to Kansas City, MO and began work at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She later took a position at the American Telephone & Telegraph Company and worked for AT&T in downtown Kansas City until her death from cancer in 1990. She later took a position at the American Telephone & Telegraph Company and worked for AT&T in downtown Kansas City until her death from cancer in 1990. Ruby had three children and five grandchildren. Ruby had many wonderful friends in Princeton, Kansas City and elsewhere. She was a beloved sister, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, colleague and friend, and is greatly missed every day.
