John Sawyer, Indiana

John Burns Sawyer, 76, of Valparaiso, Ind., died June 22, 1999, at Porter Memorial Hospital.

A prayer service was held Saturday, June 26, at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

John Sawyer was born July 13, 1922, to John K. and Celia (Burns) Sawyer. He was a graduate of Winterset High School and attended Cornell College. While attending Cornell, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He received his Wings of Gold and was commissioned an officer. During World War II, he was a fighter pilot. He later became a flight instructor and a member of the original Navy Air Show. Following his discharge, John became a transportation and trucking executive, most recently with Sawyer Transport. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Valparaiso Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a daughter.

He is survived by his wife Joan; two sons, Tim and David; and one daughter, Sean; stepchildren, Clarence and Mary; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
