Colonel William Miles Chick (1794-1847), who served in the War of
1812, his wife (Ann Eliza--1796-1876), and two of their children, left Alexandria,
Virginia in 1822. They first settled in Saline County, Missouri, then Howard
County, Missouri before coming to live in Westport in 1836 where they bought a
general store from John C. McCoy. Chick became a member of the original
Town Company of Kansas. In 1843, he moved his family to the West Bottoms
area and built the first business house in Kansas City. There was a big flood in
1844 at which time his home was lost, but his warehouse (located at Main Street
and the levee) was saved. Since the other warehouses in the city were ruined by
the flood, Chick's business boomed.
Col. Chick and his wife had nine
children. Their daughter Virginia Chick married John C. McCoy and Matilda
Chick married the Rev. Nathan Scarritt. Col. Chick died of pneumonia in April
1847.
