James William Smith was born 1829 in Tennessee to Thomas Smith and Rebecca Farley Smith. In 1847 he married Martha Mary Jane Tate. He lived much of his life in Itawamba, and Tippah, Mississippi. In September of 1861 he enlisted in the 23rd Mississippi Infantry, Company E. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. He was taken to the Corinth, Mississippi Hospital. His wife Martha, with 2 slaves came and moved him to a hospital in Memphis, where he died of his wounds and Typhoid Fever on May 23,1862.
