547 Squadron’s Consolidated B-24 Liberator GR VIII (#KK299) aircraft, with an aircrew of eleven, took off from RAF Leuchars on an anti-shipping air operation over the Kattegat sea (between Denmark and Sweden). A surfaced German submarine opened fire; although KK299 attacked the U-boat, it was shot down and crashed into the sea, taking the lives of the entire crew.

In 1993 the German submarine, U-534, was raised from the sea; it is on display in a Liverpool museum in England.

The body W/O Dale was recovered and brought to Aalborg onboard a small naval vessel; Warrant Officer Dale was laid to rest in Aalborg Søndre cemetery on 14 May 1945. Reverend Edvard Pedersen officiated at the graveside ceremony and present were Bishop D.P. v. Huth Smith, Consul Sigurd Müller, as well as RAF personnel and members of the Danish resistance movement.
