Alton Evening Telegraph, Alton, Illinois, Saturday, July 29 1944, Page 1, Col. 3: Pfc. V. H. Hosfelt Succumbs in India. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hosfelt of 602 Olmstead Way received a telegram Friday from the War Department informing them, that their son, Pfc. Vernon H. Hosfelt, 22, had died July 17 in the Asiatic area from a blood disease described as lymphadenitis.
The parents had known for some time that their son was ill and that he had been in a hospital in India, but were without information as to his ailment.
Pfc. Hosfelt was a ground mechanic with the army air forces. He entered the service in 1942 when the family lived at Puxico, Mo., under jurisdiction of the Poplar Bluff Draft board. He had been inducted at Poplar Bluff. He was born at Puxico, August 21, 1921.
The parents and their family came to Alton last January. Surviving besides the parents are three brothers and two sisters.
