A car salesman prior to enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force, he served in the RAF after training with the Empire Air Training Scheme in Canada and Britain. He was a crew member of Wellington bomber X3815 which was lost on operation on 21 September 1942 when it crashed in Denmark following an attack by enemy aircraft.
