John married first to Elizabeth Catherine Barksdale on 27 January 1869 in Perry Co., Tennessee. She is buried near him and his second wife. He married second to Mary Ann Bunn Story on 10 November 1914. He had two children by Elizabeth: Alice Jones and John R. Jones.

An article published in the McKenzie Banner, November 4th 1958:
He was born Jan. 5, 1845 in Giles County, Tennessee, and lived there until he was nearly five years old. He then moved with his mother, who was a widow, to Perry County where he worked on a farm until he was 17 years old. At this time he became a volunteer in the Union Army where he served with honor under Captain John W. Taylor and Colonel Murphy. He served in the Union Army until he was honorably discharged January 19, 1865.
At the end of the war Mr. Jones returned to Perry County where he engaged in farming for a time. He then again enlisted in the army, but for some cause he was not called for service, and thereby probably missed being in the Custer Massacre in 1876.
Mr. Jones has lived all his life in the Old Volunteer State except for two years when he moved to Arkansas and Missouri. He moved to McKenzie some 58 years ago and was well acquainted with Jim Chandler, all of he old Gilberts, Lipes, and Spellings and many others such as the Barksdales, the Thomases, old squire John Cook and others to numerous to mention.
Mr. Jones' first wife, son and daughter preceded him to the grave some years ago, and he was married a second time to Mrs. Mary Ann Story. He now lives with Tom Weatherford.
