Funeral services were held for Sarah Bass Avant, 94, on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria. Brother Bobby Colvert and Brother Curt Wagoner officiated, with interment in the Hillview Memorial Cemetery. She died on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at DeKalb Hospital in Smithville.
A resident of Alexandria, Mrs. Avant was born January 22, 1911 in Dowelltown, the daughter of the late Sarah Oakley and Lannis Archie Bass. Ms. Sarah had lived in Alexandria since her marriage to James Edward Avant on September 20, 1935 and together they worked and operated the family funeral home operation until illness in 1997 prevented them from continuing. James preceded her in death on February 18, 2001. She was a 1931 graduate of Turner M. Lawrence High School in Alexandria. She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Alexandria since 1924 and was the oldest living member at the time of her death.
She is survived by her son, Edward Wayne Avant of Birmingham, Alabama; two granddaughters and their husbands, Lori and Taney Brazeal and Tani and William Self, all of Birmingham; and by three great grandchildren, Tab, Slater and Sarah Grace Brazeal. She is also survived by two sisters, Martha Banks and Mildred Bass, both of Dowelltown.
