Albert L. Heindel, 89, of Manchester Township, died at 11:55 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Edith G. (Ruh) Heindel, whom he married February 12, 1971.
Born August 1, 1924, in York, a son of the late Lecester and Grace I. (Stambaugh) Heindel.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 9, 1943, serving in the European Theater of Operations during WWII. After discharge, he was a partner in Heindel's Meat Market, and then worked for Shipley Manufacturing and the Naval Ordinance Plant in York. He served his machinist apprenticeship at McGann Manufacturing Company, and then worked for S. Morgan Smith and Allis Chalmers Corporation, from where he retired after 34 years of employment. He also worked seasonally for Wolfgang Candy for 40 years and as a delivery person for both Schaefer and Royers Flowers. He was a member of Union Lutheran Church; Shiloh VFW Post #791; West York VFW #8951; White Rose Polka Dancers Association; and the Alpenrose German American Association, where he served as President for six years and Treasurer for eight years. Mr. Heindel is survived by two sons, Alan L. Heindel and his wife Christina, of Germantown, Tenn., and Albert L. Heindel, Jr., and his wife Rosemarie, of Big Canoe, Ga.; three granddaughters, Kristin Gates and her husband Jeremy, Saralyn Durrett, and Laura Heindel; two great-grand daughters, Miranda Gates and Max Durrett; and two sisters, Edna Dellinger, and her husband Paul of Hellam, and Florence Spangler and her husband Wayne of Dover. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lecester Heindel, Jr.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Union Lutheran Church, 408 W. Market St., York, with his Pastor, the Rev. Judith McKee officiating. Viewings will be 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at William E. Little Funeral Homes, Inc., 2150 Carlisle Road, Shiloh, and 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Church.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, with military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Union Lutheran Church, 408 W. Market St., York, PA 17401; or to Lutheran Social Services, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, York, PA 17404.
