Joseph changed his middle name from Socrates to Shirley. After entering Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, he picked up the nickname "Soc" which he disliked. He was a student at Washington and Lee in 1870 when then President of the school, General Robert E. Lee died. Joseph was one of the students chosen as bodyguard. The grandfather of Mr. J. S. Christy, of Sumner was one of the first settlers of Lawrence County in this neighborhood; and his son, William Young Christy, was afterwards a prominent man in the Legislature.
