Funeral services for William Neal Walker, 83, were held July 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton. Interment was in Forest Park Lawndale at 2:00 p.m.

William was born on March 28, 1923 in Fields, Louisiana to William DeWitt and Lucinda Jane (Taylor) Walker.

He served with the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a trained medic, yet when his unit landed at Omaha Beach, there was a shortage of truck drivers. An officer directed him to "get in and move that truck." That was the beginning of his adventures as a truck driver/mechanic.

During his military service, he had the privilege of meeting General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Post-war military service was in the Air Force.

William loved animals and at times appeared to act in the role of "whisperer." He retired from Rollins Environmental in 1991.

In recent years, he was a resident of Liberty Healthcare as his health declined. William was a member of LDS Church.

He passed away on July 15, 2008 in Liberty. His parents, four sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.

Survivors include his spouse, Vivian Mavis Walker; daughter, Debra Varela and her fiancé, Abel Garcia; and grandsons, Michael Joseph Varela and Abel Garcia II.

Services were entrusted to Sterling Funeral Home, Dayton.
