Ex-Lowes Grove Principal Is Dead
Former Lowes Grove School principal and veteran educator Jason Reid Auman, 77, of John Carpenter Road, died Monday night at his home after a lengthy illness.
He came to Lowes Grove School in 1942 and served as principal there until his retirement in 1968. He is credited with saving an old one-room wood building adjacent to the school, "The Little Red School House", which is now used as a teaching laboratory.
The establishment of the first farmers' credit union in the U.S. was also set up at Lowe's Grove by Durham financier John Sprunt Hill in cooperation with the dreaming and planning of Auman.
After his retirement he and his wife set up an Arts and Crafts shop in their home.
He was a charter member of both the Parkwood United Methodist Church and the Research Triangle Park rotary Club. The RTP Rotary Club honored him recently with the presentation of a medal and a Paul B. Harris Rotary Fellowship named in his honor. He served on the club's board of directors, its intern program selection committee and had perfect attendance at the meetings until his health weakened. He belonged to the National Education Association, the N.C. Education Association and the Retired Teacher's Association.
He was one of 12 children born in the Craigonia community of Montgomery County. He attended the Moore County schools and graduated from UNC at chapel Hill in 1923.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Parkwood United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jerry Juren, the Rev. Charles Smith and the Rev. Wesley Aitken. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Woodley Auman, a son, Jason R. Auman Jr. of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, two daughters, Mrs. Sarah A. Reed of Plano, Tex., and Mrs. Mary A. Sanders of Charlotte, a sister, Mrs. Connie A. Miller of Hamlet, and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Tom McIver, Jud Spauldine, Bob Breitweiser, Felix Bubs, Frank Ayer, Bob Bollinger, Cal Knobeloch and John Harper.
The family requests that flowers be emitted and memorials be made to Fund for Compassion, c/o Chaplain Wesley Aitken, Duke Medical Center, Durham, NC 27710.
