Arthur Raoul Sams, Jr.

October 17, 1913 - March 26, 2014

Charlotte

Arthur Raoul Sams Jr. of Charlotte, NC died on March 26, 2014, three years and 12 hours after his beloved Martha. He was born in Savannah, Georgia on October 17, 1913 to Arthur Raoul Sams and Marie Florence MacFeeley Sams. Arthur grew up in Beaufort, South Carolina and his heart never left there. He attended Clemson when it was a military school and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a business degree. While attending USC, Arthur was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

Arthur proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. After the war, Arthur resumed his career in the insurance industry. He retired at the age of 86, when he sold his McDonald-Sams Insurance Agency. In 1940, Arthur married the love of his life, Martha Isabel McNeely. They were married for over seventy years until her death on March 25, 2011. Their love and devotion to each other was an example of true Christian marriage. Arthur was active in the Mecklenburg Kiwanis Club and was appointed to serve on the City of Charlotte's first Risk Management Committee. Although raised Episcopalian, Arthur joined Martha at Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus. In the past, he held memberships in Charlotte Swim and Racquet Club, the Charlotte Athletic Club, and the Dataw Island Club. Arthur enjoyed any sport that involved water, including fishing, swimming and boating. He took up water skiing in his forties! On Saturdays, you would find Arthur at what his wife referred to as his "palatial river home" on Lake Norman. Known for his keen wit, sense of humor, love of a good joke and hearty laugh, Arthur will be missed, especially by his friends at Sharon Towers (the Presbyterian Home at Charlotte), where he lived for the past eleven years. His spirit was one of optimism and he always had a " nevah bettah" day! Arthur was loved by many. This past October, he celebrated his 100th birthday with a reception for more than 175 of his closest friends. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father, playful and active grandfather and great-grandfather.

Arthur is survived by three daughters: Sara Parker Sams, of Charlotte; Martha Barnwell Sams and husband Michael Joseph Eads of Fort Mill, SC; and Susan Raoul Sams Allen and husband A. T. Allen, III. of Raleigh. His grandchildren are Ashley McClelland Lindberg of Lake Wylie , SC, Michael Thomas Allen of Zebulon, NC and Meredith Mackenzie Allen of Raleigh. Step-granddaughter Blair Elizabeth Eads resides in Charleston, SC. Great grandchildren are Brandon Michael Cooper of Charlotte and McKenzie Anna Lindberg of Lake Wylie.

After losing his wife, Arthur became dear friends with another Sharon Towers resident, Miss Bess Burns . The family is so appreciative of the companionship and devotion Bess gave our father in his last years. The family also thanks the staff of Sharon Towers, and many of the residents for their support, love and care of our parents. Special thanks to Shamikia McGill, whose care and assistance helped Dad to remain independent. A graveside service will be conducted by Reverend Earle Roberts on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10 AM at Evergreen Cemetery. Another service will be scheduled in Beaufort soon. In lieu of flowers, a remembrance may be made to the Dataw Historic Foundation (Box 819, Beaufort, SC 29901) or to your favorite charity . Online condolences may be shared at www.tallentfuneralservice.com. J. B. Tallent is serving the Sams family.
