John Lindsay, Sr. is something of a figure of mystery. According to several accounts, he was of Scots ancestry, born in Ireland (an Ulster Scot or "Scotch Irish"), and settled on this plantation on Deep River, in what later became Guilford Co., NC in the 1720s or 1740s, but actual records suggest that his son Robert moved here in 1769. Some sources claim John was a son of the Lindsay family of Virginia, but I do not think that is correct. I believe John was probably born in Ireland, and first settled on the Maryland/Pennsylvania border. He and his sons, Robert (c.1735-1801) and John (1740-1812), likely came to North Carolina with the Nottingham Colony of Scots Irish Presbyterians in 1753.

I do not know where John settled when he first came to NC, or where he died. I do know that he was still living in 1780. In that year, Lt. John McCall wrote his will in York Co., PA. In the will, he leaves money to his "friend John Lindsay,, Sr." and leaves considerable property to "my cousin Robert Lindsay," and made Robert executor of his will. The will was probated in 1796. This suggests to me that John's wife, Robert's mother, was probably a relative of Lt. McCall. She may even have been his sister. (In those days "Cousin" meant kinsman, and could be used to refer to a nephew.)

John Lindsay, Sr, may have had another son, Thomas Lindsay, who died in Guilford Co. c. 1781.
