Retired Hiawatha businessman James L. "Jim" Bevan, 84, of Horton, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Jim was born January 28, 1930, at Hamlin, the youngest son born to Ervin "Bevo" and Olive Watkins Bevan and had lived in Brown County nearly all of his life. He started his education in a country school near Hamlin prior to attending Hiawatha schools. Jim later graduated in 1947 from Wentworth Military School in Missouri. He worked with his Dad and brothers on the family farm near Hamlin before they moved to Hiawatha. Their Dad, E.F. Bevan, known in the area as "Bevo", started Bevan Motor Company which first sold cars prior to selling Allis-Chalmers farm equipment. Bob and Jim worked for their Dad until he sold the business to the boys. Bob later bought Jim's interest in the business and went to work at Steve's Tractor Repair.

He was married to Wyilla "June" Allen, April 9, 1950, in Horton. She died May 12, 2006. Jim was also preceded in death by his parents; a son Steven Kent Bevan, May 26, 2011; and two brothers; Bill and Bob. Jim often said that he was the last of the family.

Survivors include two grandchildren: Angie Dozier of Farmer City, Illinois, Tully Bevan of Rantoul, Illinois; a niece Bobbe Jo Hayes of Chandler, Arizona; and 5 great-grandchildren. His very good friend Rosemary Medlin, of Horton, also survives.

Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Pastor Charlie Neill will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
