Bengt was the son of John & Emma Backlund. His parents farmed in Cuming county, NE at the time of his birth. His place of birth noted on his tombstone application with the military was West Point, NE. He grew up in the Oakland, NE vicinity. His father died in 1915 and his mother remarried to Gust W. Anderson, the family lived in Oakland.
Bengt worked as a newspaper agent.

WORLD WAR II VETERAN DIES; Had Suffered Injury in Service

Military funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Bengt Backlund, 40, World War II veteran who died Saturday at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln following an extended illness.
He had received treatment at intervals since suffering an injury in a fall from a troop train at San Antonio, Tex., in February, 1944, after returning from New Guinea.
Entering the army in October, 1942, Mr. Backlund was assigned to the medical corps and received his training at Brooks General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Tex., where he was graduated as a medical technician in 1943. He was stationed aboard hospital ships traveling between America and the South Pacific.
Born at West Point April 20, 1910, Bengt was the son of John and Emma Backlund. He attended the Oakland schools and resided in Oakland until entering the Army. He was confirmed in the First Covenant church by Rev. G.S. Hawkinson.
His father died in 1915. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Axel, in 1937, and his step-father in 1942.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Emma Anderson of Oakland; one sister, Mrs. T.L. Brown of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Jens of Fortuna, Cal., and eight nieces and one nephew.
Services were held at 2 p.m. at the Palmquist funeral home in Oakland, with the Rev. D.T. Gustafson of Oakland and Rev. C. Edwin Anderson of Newman Grove officiating. Members of Ryan Post 5543 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Oakland Post No. 46 of the American Legion conducted military rites.
Pallbearers were Virgil Olson, Leslie Stevens, Hugh Johnson, Kenneth Nelson, Dean Johnson and Don Swanson. Burial was made in the Oakland cemetery.
Color guard and color bearers were Elwood Johnson, Gordon Buchholz, O. Henry Anderson, Howard Person and James E. Roddy. Firing squad members were Lester E. Johnson, Robert Cromer, Roy Wagner, Ellert Sandquist, Wayne Homes and Vernon Hardesty, with Vernolt Moseman as commander. Presentation of an American flag to Mrs. Anderson was made by Myron Christensen and Donald Eriksen, commanders of the VFW and Legion, respectively.
