Mr. Lewis B. Hobby, 94, of Burlington died at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Great River Medical Center - Klein Unit.
Born April 7, 1919 in Bushnell, Illinois, he was the son of William Henry and Nora Edith Taylor Hobby. On March 3, 1942 he married Helen Louise Avery in Ft. Lewis, Washington. She preceded him in death on March 16, 1995. On December 7, 1996 he married Phyllis J. Harper in Burlington. She also preceded him in death on July 9, 2012.
Mr. Hobby was a World War II Army Veteran serving at the rank of staff sergeant-AG Publication Headquarters, Texas Corps and Supplies from October 23, 1941 - January 16, 1946. Before entering the service he worked on cars with his brothers in LaHarpe. After the service he continued working on cars at Shaegren Motors before starting work as a millwright, machinery repairman, pipe repairman and foreman at I.A.A.P., retiring in 1982.
Mr. Hobby was a member of First United Methodist Church and attended St. Luke's United Church of Christ with his wife Phyllis. He enjoyed gardening and maintaining his home and was meticulous with his lawn. His joy in life was his time spent with his family and attending the Hobby family reunions. He never knew a stranger and was always there to lend a hand. He enjoyed joking around with his nurses at Bickford Cottage and at the Klein Center and they loved him back.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Thye and Theda (Jerry) Olson; three grandchildren, Eric Thye, Seth Olson and his fiancé, Brittny Martin, and Kelsey Olson; one great grandson, Brandon Thye; one sister, Betty Link of LaHarpe, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives and two sisters and six brothers.
The funeral service for Mr. Hobby will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 28th, at Lunning Chapel. Mr. Larry Hobby will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.
A luncheon will be served at St. Luke's United Church of Christ following the committal service.
A memorial has been established for St. Luke's United Church of Christ.
