Sara Boyd, the sixth child and first daughter in the William E. and Mittie L. Boyd family, was born September 30, 1899 in the old Tom (T. P.) Burton stone house atop the hill overlooking Shady Dell School. This house is featured in Wm. Davidson's book, "Pine Log and Greek Revival" (1964). The site of her birth place was near the old Solon Beall place and just east of Moore's Cut. Nearby was Fuller's gristmill famous for its water ground corn meal. Sara's older brothers learned to swim in the Fuller millpond.
Sara Boyd attended schools at Union (Marcoot) and Lafayette. The route to Union School was across field and stream. In cases of high water she rode out the swift current on a human saddle improvised by two brothers locking hands at the wrists. To reach school at Lafayette she and the other Boyd children walked three miles, including a creek crossing by foot log. In 1918 the Boyds moved to West Point, GA, where Sara kept house for our aging parents. Being a loyal and devout Baptist Sara began teaching a Sunday School Class, a service that has been continuous for more than 50 years.
On May 31, 1936 Sara Boyd married Marvin Bishop Beckham and moved to Atlanta, GA. Marvin Beckham died May 9, 1948. There were no children. In the meantime Sara became interested in a business career, being employed by a variety store where she served in sales and finally as manager.
On July 24, 1955 Sara married Nevin Hugh Stone of Atlanta, formerly of Jasper County, GA. Since 1959 she has been in sales work with the Fabrics Center in Southwest Atlanta.
Since our parents passed away in 1941 and 1944, Sara, being the oldest daughter and the last child to live at home, has been the "mother" to whom we all look for moral support. She has give her life to family and church.
