Born in Kentucky, entered the Navy as a midshipman 1815; drowned on the Tuapan Bar in Mexico. He was a brave, skilled and gallant officer, and while in command of the Iris, with self-sacrificing heroism lost his own life in a desperate attempt to save the life of Commander N. Rinckney and others. His life was without reproach, his death was .... illustration of his principles and his profession. His body was recovered from the sea and is buried here.
