Robert McCreary was born in 1816, on the McCreery homestead, and was a son of William and Margaret McCreery, nee McClain. The former was a son of Samuel and Margaret McCreery, nee Fletcher. William was born in Ireland, and came, in 1792, with his father and family, to America, and lived for some years in what re now Juniata and Mifflin counties.--About 1800, he removed to what is now Conemaugh township, where his father and a brother, Andrew, had previously settled in what is now the Hugh Speedy farm. In removing his goods from Miffllin county to Conemaugh township, he made nineteen trips on pack-horses. In 1803, he purchased the homestead now occupied by his son, William G., in East Mahoning, made a clearing, built a cabin, and put in a crop. In the fall of 1804, he was married, and in the spring of 1805, he removed to his new home. Samuel McCreery died in 1817, about ninety-four years of age. His wife died in Ireland about 1790. William McCreery died in 1858, eighty-four years of age; his wife died in 1845, sixty-eight years old. The children were: Jane, b. in 1805, m. in 1835 to Ebenezer Hammill; James, d.; James, m. first in 1838, to Rebecca Smith, d. in 1853; second, in 1854 to Rachel L. Hammill, d. in 1856, and third to Mrs. Isabella Lytle, nee Smith; Samuel F., d., m. to Hannah McEwen; Alexander McClain, m. to Hannah Winecoop; Margaret, m. to Elijah I. work; Robert, m. to Nancy Dushane; Mary A., d. m. to Hugh H. Hamilton, d.; William G., m. first to Mary Work, d., and second to Mrs. Rachel Lytle, nee Miller; Martha E., d., m. to Samuel Matthew; and Joh. The McCreery homestead was purchased of William P. Brady, in 1803. It contained one hundred and twenty acres, and cost three dollars per acre. James McCreery's children were: William, d.; Jane, d., m. to John H. Work; Margaret M., teacher; Samuel S., m. to Martha E. Kern; Floretta, d.; Hugh H., teacher; Agnes M., d.; Mary E.; and Thomas W. Samuel S. was in the 2d battalion, six months volunteers, and in company A, 206th Pennsylvania volunteers, about one year. James McCreery located on his present farm, then in the woods, in 1838. He had been an elder in the U.P. church, and its predecessor, for forty-one years.

Nancy Dushane, the wife of Robert McCreery, was a daughter of Isaac and Mary Dushane, nee Snodgrass. The latter was a daughter of James and Mary Snodgrass, nee Hughes. The latter died in 1847, over ninety four years of age. The Robert McCreery land was patented in 1813, to members of the Holland land company. There was a well-defined trail on this land, plainly visible many years after the improvements were made. He located on this tract in 1849.James M Snodgrass was born in 1845, in Barry, Missouri, United States, his father, Anderson Snodgrass, was 24 and his mother, Nancy Elizabeth Arnhart, was 21. He died in 1850, in Barry, Missouri, United States, at the age of 5.
