Benjamin was born the son of John and Bennet (Freeman) Paine. He died at age 15, when the whaling boat he was working on was staved to pieces and he was thrown into the water. He developed a fever and, with his wounds, died. His is the oldest inscribed fieldstone (as opposed to slate) grave marker on Cape Cod. He is buried next to his mother, Bennet.
