William Noble "Bill" Schierbrock, 95, passed away March 15, 2014, due to complications related to aging. He was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. Bill went to elementary school in Great Falls, Mont., where he enjoyed swimming in the Missouri River. He Graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City, where he played the saxophone in the band and belonged to numerous clubs including chess, skating, engineers, Khem, S.O.S, tennis, basketball, Flying "E," Flying Leopards, opera, ROTC and Spanish. As a boy, his summer jobs included working on Gary Cooper's ranch and later entertaining guests at Zion National Park. At the University of Utah, Bill was enrolled in ROTC Field Artillery and Military Science and enjoyed working with the polo-ponies used to pull the field artillery, played Polo, was known as a frequent skier and was a member of the Men's Glee Club. Bill served as a Field Artillery Unit Commander in the Philippines during World War II. After the war, he was assigned to locate, investigate and process Filipino personnel for discharge and back pay from recognized guerilla units and members of USAFIP. On this assignment, he became familiar with the Filipino political beliefs and economic problems. Bill continued to serve as a reserve officer retiring as a lieutenant colonel military intelligence. His duties in the reserves included time spent on various projects at the Pentagon and travel overseas for research activities. He is a graduate of the University of Denver with a bachelor of arts in earth sciences and an master of arts in economics. As a civilian, Bill held a top secret military level of security clearance and has taught at the A.F Intelligence School, worked with the geographical survey, analyst at the Nevada Test Site, project engineer with Holmes and Narver, research scientist at the University of Denver, and management analyst with the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Nellis Air Force Base. He also worked as a planning analyst with the City of Las Vegas, held a commodity brokerage license and owned a Big "O" tire store. One of Bill's main interests and hobbies was prospecting for precious minerals. He would survey and file claims for small mineral deposits drafting all mapping requirements to meet state and federal statutes. As a community leader, he served as secretary for the reserve officer's association, working to establish an ROTC program at UNLV and supporting junior ROTC programs in the Las Vegas high schools. At Nellis AFB, he received the 1987 Retiree Activities Office volunteer of the year award. He was active in the Boy Scouts movement as a scout leader. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Jerome Schierbrock, a bomber pilot killed in Europe in action over France; his wife, of over 61 years, Edythe, a U.S. ARMY nurse, whom he met while serving in the Philippines in World War II; mother, Hazel Pearl Schierbrock of Promery, Ill.; and his father, Jerome Henry Schierbrock of Neola, Iowa. William is survived by his son, William B. Schierbrock; daughter, Lois K Garvin; niece, Jimmi Suzanne Schierbrock Hutchins; grandson, Aaron Schierbrock; granddaughter, Ali Schierbrock; great-niece, Debbie Young; and great-nephew, Jason Young. Memorial services will be at noon Thursday, May 27, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, in Boulder City.
