She was born on November 16, 1918, in Santa Cruz and joined the Army as a nurse in 1943.
She went to England during the war and worked as a surgical nurse.
After the war, she returned home to Fresno. She attended Fresno State University and received her master's degree in education and began raising her four children.
With her children raised, she went to work as a nurse for the IRS in Fresno, which she retired from in 1983.
She was proud of her nursing license and always kept it current, even after she retired.
Soon after she retired, her desire to be with animals and her love of teaching brought her to the Chaffee Zoo as a volunteer docent. She made friends with everyone at the zoo, including the animals, and loved teaching children about the exotic animals at the zoo. Lillian never let a stray dog go without food or love and was often seen riding around the Tower District on her scooter, visiting with old friends and enjoying a bite to eat at the local restaurants.
She is survived by her four children, Doug and Sandy Eckenrod of Fresno, Dennis and Louise Eckenrod of Dallas, TX., Sue Condry of Fresno, David and Darrel Eckenrod of Friant; her brother Len Ross and his wife, Vel, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
