George was born in Nomanci, Bizovac, Osijek-Baranja, Croatia to Carlous Szebényi and Julianna (Hudec) Szebényi. He immigrated to the United States aboard the S.S. Pannonia arriving in New York on July 15, 1910.

George had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1921 and served as a Private until he was released in June 1924.
