James Slack is said to have come from Kentucky with Colonel Andrew Jackson's Militia to defend the city of New Orleans during the war of 1812. After the war he went to work for a Scottish Immigrant Hugh Coyle in his Iron Works and later married his daughter Martha Patsy Coyle. (Hugh's father came from Fife Scotland.) Two other Coyles' William of 1793 and Mary Poly Coyle Humphreys of 1797, traveled with James and Martha Slack as they moved from place to place. All are found to have sold land in Yazoo County, Mississippi, and are later found in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. There are still Coyles present today at the Slack Family Reunion in Cotton Valley which is in Webster Parish, Louisiana, but used to be a part of Bossier Parish, Louisiana
