Chief Musician (rank equivalent to today's Warrent Officer), 4th US Cavalry Band.

From the Sturgis Register (newspaper): William S. Littleton, chief musician, Band, 4th US Cavalry, died in the hospital at 7:10 pm, November 4, 1909. Cause of death: Hypertrophic cirrhosis of liver. Chronic. In line of duty.

From the Sturgis Weekly Record (newspaper) of November 12, 1909: Chief Musician William S. Littleton, of the 4th US Cavalry Band, died at Fort Meade Thursday evening, November 4th. He was well known throughout the Army, and his ability as a musician was of the highest order. He first enlisted on September 2, 1885, in the 1st Cavalry, and served with that regiment until July 23, 1893, when he was appointed chief musician of the 4th Cavalry Band, and held that position until his death. A widow and three children survive him. Funeral services were held at Fort Meade Sunday afternoon, and were attended by the Masons and Eagles of Sturgis, he having belonged to both organizations, the Fort Meade band, and many of his friends and companions.

From the 1900 census, dated 1 June 1900, for the Pasay Cavalry Barracks, Philippine Islands, 4th US Cavalry: Littleton, William S., Chief Musician, resident of 3019 Buchander St, San Francisco, Calif., white, male, born March 1864, age 36, married, married for 8 years, born Illinois, father born Ohio, mother born Michigan, can read, can write, can speak English.

Editor note: The census records for 1900 give his birth date as March 1864, while his marker gives it as March 27, 1866. The 1900 census gives his birth state as Illinois, but there is no child close to his birth date in the Illinois 1870 census. The 1880 illinois census gives one child born in 1867 in Illinois, William T. Littleton, who is living with his paternal grandparents, William S. Littleton. It is likely that this is him, since the father's place of birth is given as Ohio, which matches the 1900 census listing. I have accepted the grave marker as the most likely listing for his birth date, but have used the 1880 census place as where he was born, even though it is only probably where he was raised.
