Marie Catherine Long was born October 1, 1920, to Fred and Effie (Cooley) Kent at Mount Vernon. After her mother died when she was nine, she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Fay and Louine Sibley. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1939. On February 6, 1941, she married Mark R. Long at his parent's home south of Mount Vernon. They farmed south of Mount Vernon until moving into Mount Vernon in 1993. She had been a resident of the Prairie View Care Center since 2010. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker, a lifelong member of the Friendly Club, the American Legion Auxiliary and the 8 & 40.
She is survived by six children: Janet (Larry) Thill of Mitchell; Kay (Willie) Schoenfelder of Mitchell; Jean (Jim) Lovrien of Northfield, MN; JoAnn Long, of Topeka, KS, Jerry (Sandy) Long of Mitchell; Ronnie (Sandi) Long of Mount Vernon; 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by Mark, her husband of 65 years, her parents, a step-mother, Minnie, one brother, Dennis Kent, one sister, Delores Carson and special sister, LaDema Kirkus.
