PEOSTA, Iowa - Vernon L. Bastian, 70, 14801 U.S. Highway 20, Peosta, died at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where there will be a St. Anthony's Parish Christian wake service at 5 p.m.
Mr. Bastian worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 29 years, retiring in 1987.
He was born on May 18, 1928, in Scales Mound, Ill., son of Leslie and Carrie (Temperly) Bastian. He married Pauline Loeffelholz on July 26, 1958, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dickeyville, Wis.
A veteran of the Korean conflict, he served with the Army. He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, the John Deere Retirees Local 94 and the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline; two daughters, Charlene Finger, of Dubuque, and Brenda Villarreal, of South Sioux City, Neb.; a son, Clark J. (Mary) Bastian, of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Jamie, Brandon and Leslee; a sister, Shirley Johnson, of Twin Lakes, Minn.; a brother, David (Bobbi) Bastian, of Santa Maria, Calif.; and a brother-in-law, Jim Laity, of Scales Mound.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melissa; a sister, Dorothy Laity; and two brothers, Elden and Dale.
A Vernon Bastian Memorial Fund has been established.
