Harbor pioneer Marian Weatherwax dies

Marian Weatherwax , the daughter of Aberdeen pioneers A.M. and Rose Abel, grew up to be a lover of books, a tireless supporter of education and a font of Harbor history. Born on Dec. 8, 1908, in Aberdeen General Hospital, she died Tuesday at Grays Harbor Health & Rehab. She was 97, and after a long, energetic and resilient life, "she just wore out," said her son, Scott Weatherwax of Westport. Mrs. Weatherwax had enjoyed "pretty good health" in her 90s and came from a long-lived family. Her father and mother lived to be 89 and 93, respectively. Even a bout with Type 2 diabetes couldn't get the best of her, Scott Weatherwax said. Although trouble with her vision forced her to stop driving in later years, she remained sharp until the end. "She had a great memory for people," her son said. "She could tell you everything about everybody in the neighborhood." That shouldn't come as a surprise; Marian Weatherwax was always a supporter of whatever improved people's minds. When she graduated in 1927 — from the high school named after her future father-in-law, no less — she was the valedictorian. At the University of Washington, she was Phi Beta Kappa.

Marian Jeanette Abel and Benjamin Karl Weatherwax were married on December 29, 1934 in Aberdeen, Washington. Their daughter Ann R. Weatherwax was born on July 26, 1936 in Aberdeen, Washington, and she died on January 4, 2010 in Aberdeen.
