Captain Thomas Bodycoat was born at Saint Thomas Virgin Islands and studied sailing at Southampton England. He became Captain of Sir Arthur Paget's yacht as a young man, and then served as Captain on the high seas in the 1830's. In 1841 he left England with his wife and children, and settled first at Franklin, Wisconsin, and by 1846 on the farm in Avon Township, Rock County Wisconsin, which is still in the family. During his time in Franklin and the early years at Avon he served as Captain on the Great Lakes, sailing out of Milwaukee. His sailing days were cut short by a broken leg suffered while plowing, which left him unable to make the 100 mile walk to Milwaukee, but he continued to farm until his death.
