Evelyn L. Chase, 99, of Oelwein, Iowa died on Monday afternoon, March 17, 2013 at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa; Officiating: Rev. Connie Markle; Visitation: 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home and after 10:00 A.M. on Saturday; Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein, Iowa Online Obituary at: www.jamisonschmitzfuneralhome.com Evelyn Lorraine Holmes was born on April 7, 19 14 on the family farm near Donnan, Iowa, the daughter of Vern and Lillian May (Ruvenacht) Holmes. She attended the Donnan and Randalia schools graduating from Randalia High School at Randalia, Iowa in 1934 and then from Pitze's School of Cosmetology in Waterloo, Iowa. Evelyn worked at both Hazel's and Elite Beauty Salons in Oelwein after graduation. She married Harry M. Chase on June 4, 1944 in rural Fayette, Iowa. The young couple moved briefly and lived near Camp Campbell, Kentucky before Harry was deployed in World War II to Europe. Evelyn was a resident of Oelwein for over 80 years. Most of her adult life she was referred to as the "Cake Lady", operating Chase Cakes of Beauty for over 50 years. Not only did Evelyn enjoy baking, she also enjoyed traveling, quilting, floral arranging, music and many arts and crafts over the years. Evelyn was a lifelong member of the Randalia United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church where she was active in many circles. She was also a member of N.A.R.V.R.E. and was a strong supporter of the Oelwein Volunteer Fire Department of which her husband Harry was a longtime member. Evelyn is survived by: 2 Brothers—Ralph Holmes of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Ken (Delores) Holmes of Menifee, California Sister—Dorothy Gilmer of Maynard, Iowa Sister-in-law—Marilyn Crawford of Oelwein, Iowa Many Nieces and Nephews She was preceded in death by her parents and husband (Harry M. Chase on December 26, 1990); sister (Loretta Miller) and several brother and sister-in-laws.
