William and Karolena came to America in September of 1875 with their 1 son, Edward and 2 daughters , Caroline and Johannah. Two brothers were already in America, Albert Schlueter and Rev. Charles Schlueter. The family settled in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa where other family members were already living. After Karolena died, William moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to live with his son Rev. Karl/Charles Schlueter/Schlitter and his family. William and Karolena were members of the Evangelical Church at Watson, Iowa in Clayton County, Iowa. Family legend states that it was Rev. Charles who changed the spelling of their last name because his congregation had trouble spelling the German spelling.
