Herbert met Vivian Crow while they were in school. Both graduated from Abernathy High School in 1932 and were married in 1933.
Herbert became a Baptist preacher and served in several churches with Vivian by his side. They had churches at Post, Thalia, Panhandle, Clayton NM, San Antonio, Smiley, New Braunfels, Prairie Lee and Austin. After pastoring for over 25 years, Vivian and Herbert worked for the Mexican Baptist Children Home in San Antonio and the Baptist Children's home in Round Rock Texas.
After Herbert had a stroke and was no longer able to work, Vivian went to school and became a dietitian for a nursing home in Round Rock, but had to retire in 1978 due to kidney failure.
Herbert and Vivian moved to Lubbock where Herbert died May 28, 1986 and Vivian died July 8, 1991.
