U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1817, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1820, and commenced to practice law in Fairfield, Connecticut. He was a clerk for the superior courts of Fairfield County (1826 to 1839) and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1836. In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. After leaving office, he served as a member of the Connecticut State Senate in 1844 and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1850. He was the Fairfield district judge of probate (1851 to 1854) and professor at the Yale Law School (1855 to 1865).
