James lived with his first wife, Lucy Ann Clayton, in Ocean County, New Jersey, until about 1884 or 1885 when they, along with their daughter Carolyn Adele, migrated to Phelps County, Nebraska. After Lucy's death in 1893, James returned to Ocean County, where in about 1894 he married Annie Osborn nee Herbert, a widow with adult children. When James passed on, he was buried next to his fifth child, James Alfred. The birth date on the stone incorrectly reads December 31, 1830. Records show that he was born December 30, 1831.
