Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist church in Hawarden for Sam Robert Cooper, 78, who died Monday at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City after an illness of several weeks.
Rev. Chester Custer and Rev. Paul Williams officiated. Mr. Cooper's favorite songs were sung by his grandson, John Tilgner.
Masonic services were held at the Barnard Funeral home at 11 o'clock that morning.
Pallbearers were J.E. Tilgner Sr., Elden Berge, John Tilgner Jr., Tom Tilgner, Rex Green and James Squier. Interment was at Grace Hill cemetery.
Son of John R. Cooper and Nannie Pinckard Cooper, he was born February 26, 1881, at Rocky Mount, Va., where he received his formal education. In 1913 he came to Hawarden where he made his permanent home.
In 1915 Mr. Cooper married Stella Edwards Cooper of Union county, South Dakota. She preceded him in death March 2, 1950.
For many years Mr. Cooper engaged in farming. Later he bought and operated the locate elevator. Mr. Cooper was widely known as a livestock broker and feeder. He owned and operated the Hawarden Sales Co., the Cooper's service station and in recent years he devoted his time to farming and cattle feeding.
On February 3, 1951, Mr. Cooper married Leona M. Bybuth of Evanston, Ill.
Mr. Cooper was a member of the Hawarden Masonic lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star of Hawarden; the Scottish Rite Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City. He was a member of the local Methodist church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Leona Cooper; two daughters, Mrs. Elden Berge and Mrs. J.E. Tilgner, Hawarden; five sisters, Mrs. Pearl Bailey, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Grayson Bailey, Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs. Irene Wells, Washington, D.C., Mrs. Minnie Webb, Roanoke, Va., and Mrs. Nan Markel, Lakeworth, Fla.; four grandchildren, John and Tom Tilgner and Bobby and Matt Berge, and one great grandchild, Michaela Tilgner.
