Albert W. Hickman, 98, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on March 14, 2014 at the Season's Hospice and Palliative Care Unit in the Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.

Born and raised in Girdletree, MD to Robert and Minnie Hickman, he graduated from Snow Hill High School in Snow Hill, MD in 1933. During World War II (1941-1945), Mr. Hickman worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a Brakeman, Conductor and Assistant Yard Manager. At the conclusion of the war, he worked first for Wilmington Floor Company and then for Colonial Rug & Carpet as a Floor Covering and Window Treatment Salesman until his retirement in 1980. His last five years, he worked at the Centerville Café.

Albert married Helen Bartels in 1938 in Wilmington, DE. They were happily married for 65 years. He was a member and Past Master of the West Brandywine Grange in Talleyville and a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Wilmington where he served many times on the Vestry and Search Committees. Mr. Hickman also volunteered at the Mary Campbell Center in Wilmington for 16 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and playing softball and volleyball.

Mr. Hickman is survived by his loving family - a son, Albert W. (Bill) Hickman, Jr. and his wife, Leslie of Smyrna, DE; a daughter, Anne M. Hollingsworth and her husband, Irv of Centreville, DE; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Bartels Hickman in 2003; his son, David M. Hickman in 1992; and six siblings.

A visitation will be held from 10-11am, Saturday, March 22, followed by a funeral service at 11am at Grace Episcopal Church, 4900 Concord Pike, Wilmington. Interment will immediately follow the funeral in the adjoining church yard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Seasons Hospice Foundation, 8537 Solution Center, Chicago, IL 60677.
