Edna Mary Whitmire was born as the daughter of Daniel Wallace and Edna (Varner) Whitmire on Jan. 21, 1927 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. She was the tenth of eleven children, and raised on the family farm. Moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at an early age to be with her sister Helen, she eventually met Cullen Roberts, finally moving to Cullen's hometown of Chicago, IL. She married Cullen Dallas Roberts in the mid-1940s, having one son by him. His death on Feb. 14, 1964 prompted a second marriage to Hugh Latimer Dryden, Jr. on Oct. 10, 1964, having a son by him as well. After the death of her husband on Mar. 8, 2001, she spent the rest of her years traveling between her sons in Northbrook, Illinois and Tucson, Arizona. She died on Sept. 6, 2011 after a stroke during the summer while visiting her three grandchildren in Arizona.
