Jim was born in San Diego, California to Homer Blake and Betty Louise Bender. He attended Grossmont High School. Jim's work encompassed many jobs in San Diego including foreman at Valley Box. He then followed his father and uncles to a job at General Dynamics. In 1987 he relocated to Lomita and began working at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. Jim is survived by his ex-wife and best friend, Sylvia Crouse Bender and their daughter Elizabeth Deana Bender. Elizabeth was nicknamed Betty after Jim's mother. Jim was previously married and is survived by daughters Christelle and Tara as well as seven grandchildren. In 2005, Jim and Sylvia became guardians to three grandchildren, Arianna, Tayvian and Kiarra. Sylvia continues caring for them. Sister Janice Ulrich and brothers Donald and Randy Bender also survive Jim. After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2006, Jim continued caring for his family including spending the year 2009 with his father until his fathers death. The family takes comfort in the thought that he is no longer suffering and is in his Father's house in heaven. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 1648 W. 9th Street, San Pedro on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 4:00 pm. Burial will take place in San Diego at a later date.
