ASHLAND - Ralph Albert Baker, 86, died Aug. 23, 2006, at Ashland Health Center Long Term Care Unit.

He was born Oct. 18, 1919, east of Ashland, the son of Amos R. and Grace Criser Baker. He attended Sitka schools and graduated from Ashland High School in 1939. An Ashland resident, he was a farmer and rancher.

He belonged to First Christian Church and was a member of Ashland Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater and received the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.

On May 31, 1945, he married Mary Belle Swayze in Ashland. She died May 7, 2004.

Survivors include: a son, Ronald Albert, Dodge City; three daughters, Vivian Yvonne Dome, Ashland, Martha Irene Arnold, Hutchinson, and Cetra Kay Salmans, Hanston; a sister, Sylvia Brock, Buffalo, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett Baker, Alfred Baker and Elva Baker; and a sister, Fern Johnston.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Ashland, with Minister Jim Sutherland presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Myatt Funeral Home, Ashland. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ashland.
