Norton Claypoole was born in London, England as the 13th child of Sir John Claypoole and his wife Mary Angell. He married his wife Rachel (last name unknown) at St. Alphege church in Greenwich, England on July 12, 1670. Norton Claypoole arrived in America on the ship "Bachelor's Delight" via Barbados on Feb. 2, 1678. Norton had spent the previous three years in Barbados with his brother Edward Claypoole. He settled near Lewes, Delaware, where he developed an extensive plantation of more than 2000 acres. His wife Rachel joined him in Delaware after arriving from London in 1681. (She lived in the household of Norton's brother James Claypoole in London during the 6 year seperation from her husband.) Norton Claypoole served as a Justice for the Sussex County Court, and also as a member of the state legislature. Children of Norton and Rachel Claypoole were: Mary born 1671 London (died in infancy); John born 1672 in London (died young); James born 1673 in London; Mary born 1682 in Delaware; Robert born 1683 in Delaware; Jeremiah born 1685 in Delaware; and Elizabeth born 1687 in Delaware. (The genealogy information on spouse and Pettyjohn entered below by another source is in error as this is a later generation Rachel Reed Claypoole).
