Death of L. R. Baker
Leading Member of the Baptist Church Passes

Mr. L. R. Baker, who has been an esteemed resident of Waskasoo Ave. North, Red Deer, for twenty-four years, passed away on Monday night, his call coming rather suddenly at the last, although he had been losing in strength for some time. He was in his 75th year. It was deemed advisable a year or more ago, in view of the state of his health, to subject him to an abdominal operation, which appeared to give him a new lease of life up to this summer, when he worked in his garden and looked after his bees, these taking his main work. The daughters had been out to the Baptist anniversary supper on Monday evening and had bidden him good-night, and Mrs. Baker was going to bed also, after being with him at home all evening, and bidding him good-night. She thought at midnight that she heard a change in his movements, and found that he was worse, but before the doctor reached him he was gone. The family were very much attached to each other, and Mrs. Baker especially will have the deepest of sympathy in the sudden parting.
Mr. Baker was born in Tremont, King's County, Nova Scotia, in 1854, and was married in Annapolis county, N.S. in 1882 to Miss Martha A. Dodge. The came out West in 1904, settling at Red Deer, where Mr. Baker has worked at carpentering and at times at butter-making and cheese-making, which was his regular business, but which was of late years too much for his strength. The two daughters are Mrs. H. F. Cox and Miss Ardena, of the Red Deer Public School staff, and one brother, Dr. Baker, survives him at Sussex, New Brunswick, his eldest brother passing away at Berwick, N.S., in August, 1927.
Mr. Baker's chief interest in life, outside of his home, was in the work of the Baptist church; he had been a deacon of the local church almost since his coming to Red Deer; he had been Sunday School superintendent for years, and aided in the work of the choir. He came of notable Baptist ancestry in the Maritime Provinces, and never spared himself in the wok of the church. He was always cheery and affable, and his loss will be much felt by the Baptist church at Red Deer.
The funeral is taking place from the church this afternoon. Rev. H. Young, a former pastor and a friend of Mr. Baker, will conduct the service today, and on Sunday there will be a short memorial service conducted by the pastor.
