Marion Mims Leshe

Marion Mims Leshe, 88, of Ringgold, Louisiana, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in the VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, following a brief heart-related illness. Marion was born May 14, 1925 in Ringgold to Cyril and Annie Madden Leshe. Visitation will be held at Rockett Funeral Home in Ringgold on Friday, March 14, 2014 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Ringgold on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm with pastor Bro. Ronnie Osborne officiating. Also speaking will be Bro. Jeffery H. Saxton, pastor of Kings Way Baptist Church officiating. A eulogy will be given by Mike Cottingham.
Marion served his country commendably in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Greatest Generation. He will be escorted to Springhill Cemetery in Ringgold by an Honor Guard and given a military salute during the final rites at his graveside.
Marion was predeceased by his second wife, Laura Ettredge, brother, James R. Leshe, sister, Cyrilena Leshe Spinks, and niece, Susan Leshe Williford. He is survived by nephews Eugene Larule "Rudy" Basinger (wife, Jo Ann) and James Michael Leshe (wife, Verna), of Ringgold, and nieces Leta Leshe and Rebecca Leshe Terdin (husband, Dennis) of Shreveport, Louisiana, and a stepdaughter, Martha Jo Haynes (husband, Larry) of Bossier City, Louisiana, along with other extended family and many friends.
Marion graduated from Ringgold High School in 1943 and joined the military where he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 during WWII. He received a "Meritorious Performance of Duty Award" as a gunner in the Armed Guard Crew of a merchant marine ship, the SS William A. Coulter, during action against enemy aircraft off Leyte, Philippine Islands in November 1944, and was honorably discharged as Seaman 1st Class on February 10, 1946. After Navy service, he spent 18 years doing pipeline work for various companies all over the U.S. When he returned home to live in Ringgold, he served for 16 years on the Bienville Parish Police Jury and began to collect vintage tractors, cars and trucks. Like most of the Leshe men, he had a natural born mechanical ability and would spend hours working on anything with four wheels. Marion enjoyed baseball and played during high school as well as after when he played on several regional leagues in the position of catcher. He played in the Red River Valley League in Coushatta when Joe Bill Adcock played first base for that league. Marion later decided to retire from baseball, while his well known teammate, Joe Bill, went on to a 19-year major league career in baseball. Marion's most memorable road trip was around 1989 when he joined a group of men from his area on a motorcycle journey of 5,300 miles in two weeks from Ringgold to Nova Scotia. He was a man of many interests and had a keen memory until the end of his days. He continually entertained his many friends and acquaintances with stories from his life, always with a little twinkle in his eye.
Serving as Pallbearers will be some of his closest friends: Mike Cottingham, Rusty Causey, Steve Murphy, Richard Miles, Larry Breedlove, and Billy Todd. His Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of his Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, a group he enjoyed very much. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Ringgold, 2768 Mill Street, Ringgold, LA 71068, or to the charity of donor's choice.
