Americo J. Mazziotti
PORTLAND -- Surrounded by his devoted family, Americo J. Mazziotti a lifelong Portland resident, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Maine Medical Center.
Americo was born in Portland on Sept. 27, 1921, to Joseph and Maria Pallazolla Mazziotti. He graduated from Deering High School in 1940 and worked for a short time at Burnham & Morrill Co. He then attended the Civilian Pilot Training Program and proudly earned his private pilot's license before enlisting in the Navy during WWII. He served with honors from 1942-1946 on the USS Princeton CVL-23 attack aircraft carrier in the Southwest Pacific where he earned nine battle stars as well as the Asiatic Campaign Ribbon.
Americo met his beloved wife, Mary DiMatteo, during his survival leave in 1944, and they married in June 1946. After the war, Americo and his brothers, Dominic and Raymond, worked with their father in the construction business until 1949, when the boys started Mazziotti's Brothers, Inc., a filling station on the corner of Washington and Bates Streets in Portland.
Americo was a former member of the Bald Eagle Flying Club and he belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 141 (EAA) of Portland.
Americo is survived by Mary Mazziotti, his loving wife of 60 years; along with four beloved children, Paulette and her husband Frank DiGloria, of Scarborough, Diane and her husband Clifford Strumph, of Standish, John Mazziotti and his wife Lisa, of Westbrook, and James Mazziotti and his companion Kristi Greene, of Old Orchard Beach. He also leaves four grandchildren, Angela Fowler of Portland, John Mazziotti Jr. of Limington, and Josh and Maria Strumph of Standish; as well as two great-grandchildren, Gianna Cote and Cameron Mazziotti. He is also survived by his two brothers, Dominic Mazziotti and Raymond Mazziotti both of Portland.
There will be no visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. ,Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 492 Ocean Ave, Portland. Interment with military honors will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are being handled by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
