Milton Shivers Vernon was born in Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, the son of Joseph Vernon (1820-1881) and Mary M. Richardson Vernon (1837-1916). He was married February 21, 1912 in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana, to Fredrica ("Ricca") Martin (1875-1955). He was a farmer and also a part of the road crew that built the bridge over the Patoka River at Valeene in 1888. In 1947 Milton was instantly killed when his horses were spooked while he was disking a field on his farm thus throwing him off and causing him to land on his head. He was then buried in Bluff Springs Cemetery.

Obituary: "Milton S. Vernon, 82, born April 5, 1866, Knoxville, Iowa, died September 1, 1947 at Valeene. He married Fredrica Martin on February 12, 1911. To this union two children were born, Mary and Karl. Survivors are his wife, two children, Mrs. Mary Powers of Evansville, and Karl Vernon of this community; a brother, Emory; a sister, Marthena, and four grandchildren. Mr. Vernon was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for more than 50 years. Funeral services were held at the Valeene Church on Thursday, September 4, with the Rev. Lankford in charge.
